INTRODUCTION TO NEW SERIES
From today we are starting a new series called "The Atom Series" in science category of our blog. In this new series we will look into the history of atom and learn who discovered it. If you are interested, please stay tuned for more. Today's post is about the philosopher who first thought of atom. So let's begin.
INDIVISIBLE- ATOM WITH DEMOCRITUS

AUTHOR: MAHIR KAYA
Matter is no matter without atoms and atoms have a complicated history of discovery. Atom’s history have more than 2000 years. However, some of its parts still remains a secret to the mankind which is waiting to be discovered.
Democritus was a Greek philosopher who lived between the years of B.C 460-370 in Abdera, Greece and he was the first person to name the term, atom. He thought that if a person divides a matter, he would have to stop eventually because he would reach a point where the matter could not be divided anymore. He called this fundamental particle “atom” which means indivisible. He called his theory “The Theory of the Universe”. In his theory, he stated some properties of atom such as:
1-All matters consists of atoms which are bits of matter to small to be seen.
2-There is an empty space between atoms.
3-Atoms are completely solid.
4-Atoms have no internal structure.
5-Each atom of different matter are in different size, weight and shape.
He modeled the atom as in the following picture:

Democritus was a philosopher, he did not prove his theory. He was right at some point as he was wrong at some of the others but he was the one who started the discovery of this fundamental particle. Other scientist followed him. The next scientist to take Democritus’ theory further was named Jon Dalton which we will go into more detail in our next post.
